All great choices; was it you and I that were talking re Lester Bowie?

BTW, Warren Haynes is doing a tribute to Sly on 10/29 at the Warfield. ... and apparently one to JB on Halloween. I'll try and make the Warfield show.
Warren Haynes will continue his longstanding tradition of paying tribute to his musical inspirations on Halloween. Rather than Gov’t Mule, however, the Warren Haynes Band will anchor two special events. The first of these will take place on Saturday October 29 at the Warfield in San Francisco with “Stoned!: Halloween On The Sly,” which will present the music of Sly and the Family Stone. Two days later, on Halloween proper, the WHB will appear at The Ogden in Denver for “A Funky Good Halloween” from “The Godfather of Soulshine,” which will nod to James Brown. Pre-sales for both shows begin at noon on Wednesday local time through Warren Haynes Ticketing.

Yes BD, you had mentioned seeing Lester at the Knitting Factory.Defunkt and James Chance were the real deal funk/punk/jazz bands in NYC in the 80's,I had many a fun night watching them play, and of course Sly is a master of the funk. Those Warren tribute shows sound like fun,his new band should be comfortable with the material, have a funky good time if you go.
